Physical Therapy

Do you have an injury that you protect? Is this injury stopping you from doing the sport that you enjoy? After an initial consultation, I will create a rehabilitation plan which will include some or all of the following treatments:

There are tremendous benefits to be achieved through regular massage therapy treatments from a Registered Massage Therapist. Whether your need is to have a moment of relaxation, reduce muscle tension or attain relief from chronic pain, a therapeutic massage can enhance your overall sense of emotional and physical well-being as well as your quality of life.

BENEFITS OF SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY

When injured tissue is massaged, it heals with less scarring. Including a sports massage after an event will help to clear out waste and toxins, for example, lactic acid from the muscles, reducing stiffness and enabling faster recovery than just a post-event rest.

This type of massage helps to relax the muscles, reduce stress and support a good nights sleep – all vital components that will help you make better decisions and improve the quality of your training.

Dry needling is a great technique that can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems – Muscles are thought to be a primary contributing factor to symptoms. Conditions which respond well to dry needling are:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Headaches
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome
  • Golfers elbow
  • Glute pain
  • Leg pain
  • Hamstring strains
  • Shin splints
  • Muscle spasms
  • Sciatic pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Repetitive stress injury
  • Shoulder strains
  • Fibromyalgia sciatic

Drying needling is based on western anatomical and neurophysiological principles which are sometimes confused with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) essentially acupuncture. Needles similar to acupuncture needles are inserted into the skin and muscle at a myofascial point, more commonly known as a ‘knot’, BY targeting multiple knots in a particular area with the objective to relief pain caused by contracting the muscle.

TAPING

The use of Kinesiology Tape, commonly referred to as KT tape, is a useful tool when trying to manage a minor injury. KT tape is an elastic and flexible sports tape designed specifically to relieve pain and support muscle, ligament and tendon injury. It allows you to keep moving and get through your race, endurance event or match. After the event, KT tape will help you recover while you train.

STRAPPING

Strapping is used predominately to help an injured joint when rest is not an option or when you know you need to protect a particular ligament/ set of ligaments.

I use strapping on my left ankle when trail running as my ligaments are lax from a previous injury. If I don’t this,  I can guarantee it will be very sore the next day. So I make sure to use what tools I need so that I can train.

This assessment forms a key part of the initial consultation. This information helps me to understand where the stresses are in your body, identify what is causing the pain and shape your recovery plan. To do this, I will take you through a series of tests to find the imbalances , be it a weak, tight or overworked muscle. Years of experience has shown me that a discomfort or pain in one part of your body is protecting the root cause, for example, a tight back muscle may show up as pain in a lower limb.

Runners will hop on the treadmill so that I can assess their cadence, gait and technique. Like wise, I assess cyclists and swimmers by testing their range of motion specific to the type of sport or event they are training for.

The assessment take into account:

  1. The type of sport you are training for, for example; Cork City Marathon, Iron Man, Cross-Country, Road Racing, Spartan or a team sport like the county hurling final, a soccer championship, or are you looking to play in another rugby season?
  2. The type of work that you do, for example if you are an athlete who sits at their desk all day, then you will need to build in regular exercises to ensure flexibility in the hips. Likewise are you driving a lot, long hours standing in one spot?
  3. Your lifestyle taking into account your sleep patterns, work/ life balance and availability to train.

This information will help to formulate a training plan that can work around your schedule while achieving your goals!
