My Story

With the right mindset, anything is possible.

Meet Des Ryan

In 2005 after a near-fatal car crash doctors told me, “your running days are over”. I was devastated. It was a long and tough recovery, but I’m living proof that with a positive attitude and hard work you can achieve anything you want.

Through my own rehabilitation journey, and by taking continually participating on as many courses as I can, I have learnt how to rebuild myself mentally and physically. I use this wealth of knowledge and experience to help you, my clients, recover from injury through mobility techniques, physical therapy and by creating a custom-built training plan that will help you meet your sporting goals.

Where it All Began

My love of all things sporty started at an early age and I have always been competitive! I come from Portuma, Co. Galway, a legendary hurling town where hurling was bred into me. I soon discovered my real sporting passions were boxing and motorbike racing. Both sports require discipline, hard work and a tough mental attitude – you literally had to roll with the punches 😉 Motorcycle racing demands that you are in optimum shape – like boxing this requires a strict training programme, however, I also spent a lot of time recovering from injury. Staying within the sporting world, I changed direction to become a Physical Therapist (I’ll proudly add I got a distinction for this course😊).

I have also qualified as a Boxing Coach with the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (I.A.B.A.) during my time with Galway Boxing Club and then went on to set up Midleton Boxing Club, the first in the area.

I have worked with sports teams, such as the Senior Hurlers, from Midleton GAA Club, as their Physical Therapist and Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Practicing what I Preach

I continue to learn and upskill so that I can bring the best knowledge and the latest innovative best practices to help my clients. I have recently completed a course on Nasal Breathing – which I am finding hugely beneficial for my own training programme. I have trained as an Animal Flow Instructor – this form of movement is a great way to recover from tough sessions on those ‘rest’ days.

As an athlete, I love to compete in particular endurance events such as The Hardman (an Ironman distance triathlon), Spartan (obstacle race with a difference!) and the Quest endurance race series. I have done my fair share of road racing, sprint duathlons and trail racing, but I have to say I enjoy the variety of sports disciplines that the triathlon and endurance race offers …. plus they are the most challenging events I have ever trained and competed in. A physical and mental test of resilience!
